Caroline Kennedy selected as juror in trial of alleged drug dealer

NEW YORK, May 14 (UPI) -- Caroline Kennedy, the daughter of president John F. Kennedy, has been picked as a juror in a New York criminal trial despite her famous family's background.

Attorneys defending a suspected drug dealer appeared to ignore her connections to law enforcement, the New York Post reported Tuesday.

Robert Kennedy, her uncle, was attorney general of the United States and her brother, John F. Kennedy Jr. worked as a prosecutor in the Manhattan district attorney's office for four years. She also is an attorney.

Kennedy did not mention she had campaigned in 2009 for the current district attorney, Cyrus Vance Jr.

Neither did she mention the man convicted in 2011 of stalking her daughter, the New York Daily News reported.

Responding to questions given to members of the potential jury panel, Kennedy declined to answer if she had ever been a victim of a crime. Her father and her uncle Robert were both assassinated.

When asked by a defense lawyer if any of the potential jurors knew anyone with a drug problem, she said, "I know ... a few people."

Three of her cousins have struggled with drug addiction.

The defendant, Nelson Chatman, 31, is being tried on third-degree felony charges of selling crack cocaine. He was arrested after he allegedly sold crack to an undercover police officer in December.
