PHILADELPHIA, May 14 (UPI) -- Philadelphia abortion provider Dr. Kermit Gosnell will serve life in prison for the deaths of three infants, attorneys in the case said Tuesday.
He agreed to waive his right to appeal in exchange for being spared the death penalty.
Gosnell was sentenced to life in prison Tuesday after reaching a deal with prosecutors in which he agreed to give up his right to all future appeals, KYW radio, Philadelphia, reported.
The 72-year-old physician was found guilty Monday of first-degree murder for killing three babies born alive during abortion procedures. He was also found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the 2009 death of Karamaya Mongar, 41, who died after an anesthesia overdose during an abortion procedure
Judge Jeffrey Minehart imposed two life sentences on Gosnell as soon as the deal was completed Tuesday, KYW said. The judge is expected to impose a third life sentence on Gosnell Wednesday after Mongar's family is given the opportunity to make a statement in court.
