O.J. Simpson appears in Vegas court to ask for new trial

LAS VEGAS, May 13 (UPI) -- O.J. Simpson, cuffed and in blue prison garb, was in a Las Vegas courtroom Monday to ask for a retrial on robbery and kidnapping charges.

Court security removed the shackles from the former NFL star and movie actor's wrists before his hearing in Clark County Circuit Court started, the Los Angles Times noted.

A bailiff ordered courtroom audience, which included several of Simpson's relatives, not to call out to him or make contact with him.

Simpson, 65 is serving nine to 33 years in prison on the robbery and kidnapping conviction, which stemmed from his attempt to recover sports memorabilia he contended rightfully belonged to him.

The Times said if Simpson testifies Wednesday, as expected, it would mark his first court statements in the case.
