'Barefoot Bandit' gets three months for theft of airplane

MOUNT VERNON, Wash., May 9 (UPI) -- Colton Harris-Moore, who eluded police while on a two-year crime spree, had his day in a Washington state courtroom and was sentenced to three months in jail.

In accepting the plea Wednesday, Superior Court Judge Michael Rickert called the saga "the last page of the last chapter." Harris-Moore, known as the "barefoot bandit" pleaded guilty to 48 felonies in Washington state and federal courts for a string of thefts, including boats, airplanes and vehicles, the Skagit Valley Herald in Mount Vernon, Wash., reported.

Rickert called the resolution of the Skagit County case a "good idea" following three months of "arguing" and "grandstanding" over pleas and jail terms. Harris-Moore, 22, pleaded guilty to second-degree burglary for the theft of an airplane, which he flew without any formal training.

Harris-Moore committed many of his crimes while barefoot and became an underground cult hero with 50,000 Facebook fans. He was arrested in July 2010 in the Bahamas, CNN said.

Harris-Moore declined to make a statement during Wednesday's proceedings, the Herald said.

"You're a very bright and intelligent young man. I believe that," Rickert told Harris-Moore. "There's probably a lot of good in you, too."

"I hope you can turn your life around and do some good for people," the judge said.
