WASHINGTON, May 2 (UPI) -- Americans say the cost of tuition should be cut and employers should provide financial support to make higher education more affordable, a Gallup poll said.
More than half of those polled said the government should provide more assistance, the survey by Gallup and the Lumina Foundation reported Thursday.
Some 77 percent of respondents agreed or strongly agreed tuition and fees at colleges and universities should be reduced, and two-thirds said their companies do not offer enough support and services to help them get a better education.
Nearly half said their employers allow them to use flextime so they can go to classes.
While 44 percent said their employer provides on-the-job training that results in a workplace certificate, only 36 percent said their company offers other types of educational support.
Some 55 percent agreed or strongly agreed the federal government should provide more assistance, while 59 percent thought their state government should.
The poll concluded that while the majority of Americans supported increased government assistance to pay for college, more felt the best approaches were lowering tuition and having employers step in to help.
The survey of 1,009 adults was conducted Nov. 9 –Dec. 4, 2012 The margin of error was 4 percentage points.
