USC President C.L. Nikias praised the former four-star U.S. Army general in a statement for his "fearless commitment to excellence" and said Petraeus' appointment would "have a profound impact on our students across many disciplines."

Petraeus has a bachelor's degree from West Point and received a doctorate from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs from Princeton University.

He commanded U.S. forces in Iraq in 2008 and was named director of the CIA in September 2011. He resigned in November after the FBI uncovered his extramarital affair with his biographer.
