ACLU: Bisexual girl, 14, thwarted in forming gay-straight school club

LEESBURG, Fla., May 1 (UPI) -- The American Civil Liberties Union said it will champion the case of a student barred from starting a Gay-Straight Alliance club at her Florida middle school.

Bayli Silberstein, 14, an openly bisexual eighth-grader, has attempted since November to establish the club at Carver Middle School in Leesburg, the Orlando Sentinel reported Wednesday.

Her principal has taken no action on her club application and school board members have tried to create new rules pertaining to student clubs that would keep her club from forming, the Sentinel reported.

"I'm really frustrated that we've reached this point, but we can't wait any longer. The bullying at my school is really bad, and I don't want to have another school year go by without kids feeling like there's a safe place where they can be themselves. But the school board keeps trying to stop us," Bayli said in a statement prepared by the ACLU.
