Second body found in plane wreckage after in-flight collision

VENTURA, Calif., April 30 (UPI) -- Searchers found a second body Tuesday in the wreckage of a plane whose pilot's body was recovered after an in-flight collision in California.

The Cessna 172 plane crashed soon after colliding with another aircraft about 2 p.m. PDT Monday in the Santa Monica Mountains. The second plane -- also a single-engine Cessna -- made an emergency landing on a golf course and three people aboard sustained non-life-threatening injuries, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Rescuers found the second body Tuesday, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department spokesman Steve Whitmore said. He said the plane apparently hit the ground nose first.

The crash sparked a fire that burned about an acre of brush, the Los Angeles County Fire Department said.

Officials said the plane that landed at Westlake Village Golf Course also was a Cessna 172 that could have taken off from Santa Monica Airport, the Times said.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Allen Kenitzer said in a statement the plane in which the pilot and a passenger were killed had just taken off from Santa Monica Airport for an engine test flight.
