VALLEY SPRINGS, Calif., April 28 (UPI) -- Sheriff's deputies in Valley Springs, Calif., said they are searching for the man who allegedly killed a 9-year-old girl.
The homicide occurred Saturday afternoon at a Valley Springs home, police said.
The victim's 12-year-old brother found the intruder inside the house, and the suspect then ran away.
The boy went to go check on his sister and discovered she had been stabbed, KCRA-TV, Sacramento, reported.
She was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
The suspect has been described as a white or Hispanic male with long gray hair, KOVR-TV, Sacramento, reported.
He is 6 feet tall with a muscular build and was last seen wearing a black long-sleeved shirt and blue pants.
Residents were told to lock their doors as deputies searched Calaveras County for the man, who is believed to be armed and dangerous.
A quarter-mile perimeter was set up for the search.
"We were doing a house-to-house search and in some cases were searching attics and storages. It's a difficult area to search. It's rural, it's remote," Capt. Jim Macedo said.
