Girl, 13, charged with robbery attempt in New York's Central Park

NEW YORK, April 26 (UPI) -- A 13-year-old girl was charged with being involved in an attempt to steal a woman's cellphone and purse in New York's Central Park.

The woman told police two children, a girl who appeared to be 12 to 14 and a boy who looked like he was 10, tried to rob her Monday evening near Fifth Avenue in the northeast corner of the park, WNBC-TV reported.

Witnesses said the two children were talking to another girl who looked like she was around 14 immediately after the robbery attempt.

The girl arrested Thursday was charged as a juvenile with second-degree attempted robbery.

Area residents were shocked at the report of child muggers.

"It makes me wonder who's at home wondering where they are," David Chapman, a park visitor, told WNBC.
