R.I. Senate approves bill allowing same-sex marriage

PROVIDENCE, R.I., April 24 (UPI) -- The Rhode Island state Senate voted 26-12 Wednesday in favor of legislation allowing same-sex marriage in the state.

The legislation, which would bring same-sex marriage to Rhode Island as soon as Aug. 1, now goes to the House, which voted 51-19 this year in favor of same-sex marriage, The Providence (R.I.) Journal reported.

The House Judiciary Committee is expected to begin work Tuesday on bills approved by the Senate, and the entire House could vote on the measures as early as May 2, the newspaper said.

Nine other states -- five of them in New England -- have legalized same-sex marriage.
