NEW YORK, April 23 (UPI) -- Officials Tuesday blamed the sequester for delays in U.S. airline flights at New York airports.
The Federal Aviation Administration reported delays of 30 to 44 minutes at Newark International Airport and delays greater than 45 minutes at LaGuardia airport.
Problems at those airports often create a ripple effect throughout the national air travel system, The Washington Post reported, adding a similar situation occurred Monday.
Although Congress returned to session Tuesday, there is little hope for action that could resolve the furloughs, the newspaper said, adding the White House and most Democrats in Congress are pushing for resolution of the larger sequestration issue, which could return the funding required to bring the air-traffic controllers back to work.
The FAA said the furloughs are necessary to obtain $200 million of the $637 million in savings it is mandated to achieve in 2013 to meet sequestration targets.
