PRINCETON, N.J., April 19 (UPI) -- Most Americans either already own their homes or plan on buying one in the next 10 years, a Gallup Poll said this week.
Only 11 percent of the population told the pollsters they did not currently own their own place and did not have any plans to buy one.
By comparison, 56 percent of the respondents already owned their home and planned on staying put. Another 25 percent said they expected to get into market sometime in the next 10 years.
"These results certainly suggest that the "American Dream" of owning a home is still very much alive, and that the real estate industry should expect a continuing demand for home ownership in the years ahead," Gallup said in a written statement.
The pollsters said the sentiment toward home ownership was particularly strong among younger Americans. Nearly 7-in-10 respondents aged 18 to 29 told Gallup they anticipated becoming homeowners in the future. "Coupling this with the 21 percent of younger Americans who say they already are homeowners leaves few adults under 30 who say they don't own a home and have no plans on buying one," Gallup said.
The survey was based on telephone interviews conducted April 4-14 with a random sample of 2,017 adults, aged 18 and older, living in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. The margin of error was pegged at 3 percentage points.
