NEW ORLEANS, April 11 (UPI) -- A boat captain injured March 12 in a fiery explosion on the Intracoastal Waterway near New Orleans when his boat struck a pipeline has died, officials said.
Chad Breaux was one of four crewmen aboard a 47-foot tugboat pulling a 154-foot barge in Bayou Perot, 30 miles south of New Orleans, when it struck a Chevron pipeline, igniting a gas fire fed by the pipeline that burned for days, WDSU-TV, New Orleans, said.
The accident occurred at a spot where the water was only 1- to 2-feet deep, U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Kyle Washington said.
Breaux was hospitalized with burns over 75 percent of his body, and died Wednesday in the burn unit of Baton Rouge General Hospital The (New Orleans) Times-Picayune reported Thursday.
The barge was carrying 92,000 gallons of oil at the time of the incident. U.S. Coast Guard officials said none of the oil spilled.
