OSHA fines contractors in garage collapse

MIAMI, April 11 (UPI) -- Federal regulators have fined contractors involved in work on a garage at Miami Dade College where four construction workers were killed in a collapse.

Seven people were injured in the parking garage accident at the college's campus in Doral, Fla., in October.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration issued citations Wednesday against four contractors involved in the project and imposed fines of up to $7,000, The Miami Herald reported. The OSHA investigation is still going on and the agency has made no finding on what caused the collapse.

Lawyers involved in litigation say the contractors hurried the work too much, leading to fatal errors. In one of the most significant, they say, a column's base was allegedly not cemented, leading to its collapse two days after a crane hit the structure.

"There is already enough in these reports to verify that we're on the right track,'' said Stuart Grossman, a lawyer for several plaintiffs in the case. "I am obviously shocked at the findings, but they're exactly what I suspected. This was a misadventure from start to finish, and the lives of these families will never be the same.''
