Release denied for beard-cutting Amish man

AKRON, Ohio, April 10 (UPI) -- A federal judge in Ohio has denied a motion to release an Amish man convicted of cutting the hair and beards of other Amish men.

Attorneys for Sam Mullet Sr. has asked for his release on bond pending an appeal, WJW-TV, Cleveland, reported Tuesday.

Mullet was sentenced in February to 15 years in prison after he and 15 of his followers were convicted of hate crimes.

Judge Dan Aaron Polster listed several reasons for denying the request. Among them, Polster noted the request said Mullet was not likely to flee and "poses no danger to the community."

The judge ruled, "to the contrary, the court has already found he is a danger to the community."
