Convict executed for 1990 murder, rape

HUNTSVILLE, Texas, April 10 (UPI) -- Inmate Ricky Lynn Lewis was executed in Texas for killing a man and raping the man's fiancee in 1990, the state's second execution of 2013.

Lewis was convicted of breaking into the home of George Newman, 50, in rural Smith County, shooting him to death and raping his fiancee, KHOU-TV, Houston, reported Wednesday.

The execution Tuesday evening in Huntsville came after the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear Lewis' case last week and the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles unanimously voted against a request of clemency. There were also no last-day appeals to halt the execution by Lewis' lawyers, the television station noted.
