CULPEPER, Va., April 4 (UPI) -- A Library of Congress employee in Culpeper, Va., is accused of posting fake sex ads online targeting a woman he dated briefly, officials said.
Kenneth Edward Kuban, 61, of Reva was arrested in March after an undercover investigation found probable cause he violated a protective order from July 2011 prohibiting contact with the woman, the Culpeper Star Exponent reported Thursday.
A hearing is scheduled for Friday in U.S. District Court for the Western Division of Virginia in Charlottesville to determine whether the film preservationist should be released while awaiting trial on a felony stalking charge.
The woman, identified as L.M., who sought the protective order, claims Kuban began stalking and harassing her after their six-month relationship ended in February 2011.
A federal investigation found ads Kuban allegedly posted often on Craigslist from his Library of Congress work computer directed men to the woman's home with the promise of sex, the Star Exponent said. Kuban pretended to be L.M. in corresponding with ad respondents.
"This conduct has led to random men, often traveling from other states, to appear at L.M.'s property looking to have sexual relations with her," court documents said.
Separately, Kuban was questioned by Madison County authorities in 2011 in the disappearance of Lauren Susann Smith, Madison County Sheriff Erik Weaver told the Star Exponent. There has been no evidence tying Kuban to Smith's disappearance.
"We just took another look at him," Madison County sheriff's investigator Greg Garrett said Wednesday. "There is nothing there at this time to indicate [Kuban] is involved in Lauren's disappearance."
