CHICAGO, April 3 (UPI) -- A bank robber was sentenced to life in prison Wednesday for holding up two banks in Chicago in 2007 and killing a teller at one of them.
David Vance, 34, of Chicago was convicted last July of fatally shooting Tramaine Gibson, 23, during a May 22, 2007, robbery at the Illinois Service Federal Savings and Loan. Authorities said Vance and two co-defendants made off with $6,875. A security guard and a customer were wounded in the holdup.
Vance also was found guilty of robbing the Cole Taylor Bank in Chicago of $11,438 May 10, 2007.
U.S. District Judge Joan Gottschall handed down a mandatory life sentence with no chance for parole, and imposed a mandatory consecutive sentence of 32 years for Vance's use of a gun during the crimes.
Vance was ordered to pay nearly $1.2 million in restitution to the banks, Gibson's estate and for the security guard's disability, though the U.S. attorney's office said it's unlikely any of that money will be recovered.
Vance's co-defendants, Alton Marshall, 34, who testified against Vance, and Henry Bluford, 35, both of Chicago, each pleaded guilty to the bank robberies. They are expected to receive sentences of 20 years in prison when they are sentenced later this month.
