Vandal topples Jesus statue on Easter

ROCK ISLAND, Ill., April 2 (UPI) -- An Easter Sunday vandal in Illinois destroyed a large concrete statue of Jesus, arms outstretched invoking the resurrection.

The statue, 6 feet tall and weighing an estimated 800 pounds, stood outside the Sacred Heart Church in Rock Island. Security cameras outside the church captured an unidentified man walking by. He sets down a bag as he reaches the statue about 9:20 p.m. Sunday, climbs a small brick wall surrounding the statue and begins trying to push it over, Quad Cities Online said Monday.

Eventually he succeeded, leaving the statue lying face down with a large crack down the center and damaged arms.

Police are investigating and implored members of the community to come forward if they have information, Quad Cities Online said.
