Boston College warns 'safe sex' group

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass., March 27 (UPI) -- Boston College, one of the best-known Catholic universities in the United States, says a student group could be disciplined if it continues to hand out condoms.

In a letter to the Boston College Students for Sexual Health, an organization not recognized by the university, officials say the group must stop providing "Safe Sites," on-campus locations where students can get sex information and condoms, The Boston Globe reported.

Dean of Students Paul Chebator and George Arey, director of residence life, said the names of students believed to be distributing condoms could be given to the student conduct office.

Students have a "responsibility to protect the values and traditions of Boston College as a Jesuit, Catholic institution," the letter said.

Lizzie Jekanowski, a student who heads the organization, said there are 18 Safe Sites, including one off campus. She said officials have known about them for two years without taking action.

"We were very disappointed that the signatories of the letter never contacted us beforehand," she said. "We've had a very open relationship and it's been very positive. This letter was very warmongering and threatening."
