Alleged gunman arrested after standoff

TACOMA, Wash., March 27 (UPI) -- Police arrested a 67-year-old man Tuesday who allegedly walked through a neighborhood in Tacoma, Wash., firing randomly at houses.

The man was described as having problems with substance abuse, KING-TV in Seattle reported. Police said he barricaded himself into his house but surrendered shortly before 9 p.m. after tear gas canisters were thrown into the building.

No injuries were reported. Witnesses said the man had pointed his gun at people, but the shots he fired hit only houses.

Ed Troyer, a spokesman for the Pierce County Sheriff's Office, said the man was believed to have four high-powered assault weapons in his house. He was involved in an alleged driving under the influence incident last week.
