SEATTLE, March 27 (UPI) -- A retired couple were killed and their daughter-in-law and her baby were injured when hit by a suspected repeat-offender drunken driver in Seattle, police said.
Dennis Schulte, 66, and Judy Schulte, 68, were killed in the cross-walk accident Monday. Karina Ulriksen-Schulte, 33, and her 12-day-old son Elias were hospitalized in critical condition, KIRO-TV in Seattle reported.
The Schultes were retired teachers from Kokomo, Ind., who had traveled west to help care for their grandchild, The (Louisville, Ky.) Courier-Journal reported.
Mark Mullan, 50, the accused driver, was driving his pickup truck on a suspended license, KIRO-TV reported.
Lacia Bailey, a witness who said she spoke with the victims seconds before they crossed the street, said they stopped to see Bailey's pet baby goat.
"I saw the truck at a high rate of speed hit the people in the intersection. They were all lying there, motionless," Bailey said.
Mullan's blood-alcohol level was 0.22 at the time of the incident, almost three times the legal limit, police said.
Court records show Mullan has a history of drunken driving arrests.
Prosecutors Tuesday asked for Mullan's bond to be set at $2 million. The judge set it at $2.5 million in light of Mullan's previous record, the TV station reported.
It was expected Mullan will be charged with vehicular homicide and assault, the TV station said.
