Hostage standoff ends in suicide

MINNEAPOLIS, March 23 (UPI) -- Minneapolis police said a five-hour standoff ended in suicide after a man fled the scene of a shooting and holed up with a female hostage.

The incident began around 10:30 p.m. Friday when police were called to the scene of a shooting in an apartment complex. Authorities found a man who'd been shot and suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The man was able to tell police who shot him, the Minneapolis Star Tribune said.

Police tracked the suspect to another apartment in the building where the man was holding a woman hostage. Negotiators convinced the man, whose identity was not given, to release the woman without harm.

After hearing a gunshot, police deployed a robot into the apartment to confirm the man had died.

It was unclear Saturday what prompted the first shooting or the relationship between the suspect and the woman he held hostage.
