2 teens dead after failed home invasion

SHAWNEE, Okla., March 21 (UPI) -- An Oklahoma teenager who stole a truck and 15 guns from his parents died in Texas with another teen in a failed home invasion Wednesday, police said.

Investigators believe Kenneth Chaffin 17, and Dillon King, 18, took their own lives after a homeowner in Maypearl, Texas, opened fire on them, KWTV-DT in Oklahoma City reported. The man suffered minor injuries in the exchange of shots.

Roland Chaffin of Pottawatomie County in central Oklahoma said his son took off while he and his wife were out Monday night. Kenneth left in his father's pickup truck after loading it with six rifles, nine handguns and hundreds of rounds of ammunition.

"Why he left, we don't have a clue right now," Chaffin said. "We'll probably never know, other than you know Kenneth has always bucked my rules. I'm a hardnosed parent. I believe in rules, and all my kids know it."

A search was launched Tuesday but no sign of Kenneth Chaffin or the truck was found.

A woman who was home alone in Maypearl at about 1 p.m. Wednesday said she heard someone trying to open a door and saw a man outside wearing camouflage clothing with a rifle strapped to his back. Her husband, who arrived home at that time, spotted two men and got his gun.

"I believe it would have been a different outcome had they not been armed, because our suspects were heavily armed," Ellis County Sheriff's Lt. James Saulter said.

Chaffin said he had no clue why his son decided to run away and apparently to take a violent turn.
