Texas court denies 'Texas Seven' appeal

AUSTIN, Texas, March 20 (UPI) -- A Texas court Wednesday denied an appeal by Texas death row inmate Randy Halprin, one of the so-called Texas Seven convicted of killing a police officer.

Halprin, 36 -- convicted in 2003 of the death of Irving, Texas, police officer Aubrey Hawkins during a robbery following their prison escape in 2000 -- offered 31 allegations to the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals "challenging the validity of his conviction and resulting sentence," the court's order said.

After several hearings, the court ruled against him Wednesday.

Halprin was serving a 30-year prison term for nearly beating an infant to death when he and six other inmates escaped in 2000. Two of the "Texas Seven" have been executed, another killed himself before his capture, and the remaining four are on death row in Texas, The Dallas Morning News reported Wednesday.
