GALLATIN, Tenn., March 20 (UPI) -- A Tennessee woman has been convicted of killing her newborn twins and faces two automatic life sentences.
A jury deliberated less than 2 hours Tuesday before reaching its verdict in the case against Lindsey Lowe, 26, of Hendersonville, The (Nashville) Tennessean reported. She was also found guilty of aggravated child abuse.
The sentencing hearing is scheduled for April 26. Lowe was jailed immediately following the verdict.
Lowe, who had concealed her pregnancy, gave birth to the infants in a bathroom in her parents' house. Under police questioning, she admitted holding her hand over each newborn's mouth, suffocating them.
Prosecutors said she did not want her fiance to know she had had sex with another man. Her lawyer argued she denied her pregnancy because she was in a dissociative state.
Sumner County District Attorney Ray Whitley said after the verdict he believed Lowe's videotaped statement was key to the jury's decision.
"Certainly it was a key because she admitted what she had done," he said. "It was unsullied, and I believe the truth backed up what her statement was."
Lowe -- if given the automatic life sentences -- would not be eligible for parole until she is at least 77 under Tennessee law.
