NEW HAVEN, Conn., March 17 (UPI) -- A freight train derailment in New Haven, Conn., Sunday caused hours-long detours in travel between Boston and New York City, Amtrak officials said.
A Providence & Worcester freight train derailed overnight, blocking tracks on the Northeast Corridor, Amtrak said in a news release.
The passenger train line has established a detour route between Boston and New York City.
Passengers heading north will depart New York Penn Station, travel to New Haven and then detour to Boston through Springfield, Mass.
Passengers heading south from Boston will use the same Springfield detour. Passengers heading south from points north of New Haven must first travel north to Boston, then take the Springfield detour.
"Passengers should allow several hours of extra time to make this special trip," Amtrak said in the release.
Amtrak said there is no estimated time for resumption of normal service.
Passenger who had already purchased tickets but choose not to take the detour will receive a refund or voucher for future travel.
