PRINCETON, N.J., March 11 (UPI) -- A majority of Americans, 56 percent to 38 percent, said they support reductions in U.S. and Russian nuclear arsenals, a Gallup poll released Monday indicates.
Results indicated Democrats were more inclined to support a reduction and Republicans were about evenly divided on the issue. Gallup said overall the level of support is lower now than it has been in previous years.
A Gallup poll conducted March 2-3 asked Americans how they would vote on a number of potential issues, including U.S.-Russian nuclear reductions. President Obama said in his State of the Union address he is considering a plan for further reductions in U.S. and Russian nuclear weapons, beyond those agreed to in the 2011 arms reduction treaty.
A question about the treaty in December 2010 yielded results similar to those from the current poll, with 51 percent saying they would vote for the treaty and 30 percent saying they were against it, the Princeton, N.J., polling agency said.
Results for the item on nuclear arsenals are based on nationwide phone surveys of 1,028 adults conducted March 2-3 for the Gallup Daily tracking survey. The margin of error is 4 percentage points.
