Former mayor goes to prison

CENTRAL FALLS, R.I., March 4 (UPI) -- Charles Moreau, former mayor of Central Falls, R.I., will surrender to federal officials Monday to begin a two-year prison term, his lawyer said.

Attorney William J. Murphy confirmed Moreau, 49, who served 9 years as mayor of Rhode Island's poorest city, will report to the federal prison complex in Cumberland, Md.

Moreau was sentenced in February on corruption charges, resigning from his position and admitting guilt to one count of federal program fraud.

He awarded an emergency no-bid contract to Michael Bouthillette, a friend and political supporter who made more than $1 million in boarding up abandoned buildings in Central Falls. Bouthillette then installed a new furnace in Moreau's home, and made more than $16,000 in renovations in a second home of Moreau's, without ever receiving payment, the Providence Journal, said Monday.
