Wife waives hearing in White murder case

MEDIA, Pa., Feb. 25 (UPI) -- Maria Reyes Garcia-Pellon, accused in the stabbing death of her husband, former Penn basketball star Matthew White, waived her preliminary hearing Monday.

When asked in Media, Pa., District Court by Judge Stephanie Klein if Garcia-Pellon, 52, had been seen by a psychiatrist, defense attorney Kathryn Labrum said her client had and that she appears competent to stand trial.

The courtroom was crowded with Garcia-Pellon's friends and supporters, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported Monday.

Garcia-Pellon allegedly killed White, her husband of 25 years, by stabbing him with a knife as he slept in their Nether Providence, Pa., home on Feb. 11. The day before the slaying he had taken her to a local hospital, and her appointment with a psychiatrist was scheduled for the next day, the newspaper added.

Garcia-Pellon is charged with first-degree murder.
