10 train cars derail in Maryland

ELKTON, Md., Feb. 21 (UPI) -- Ten cars of a 90-car train derailed in Maryland's Cecil County, prompting reports of a sulfuric acid leak, which proved to be false, police said.

Emergency crews from three states responded to the derailed CSX Corp. train Wednesday night after the acid leak was reported, The Baltimore Sun reported.

The call reporting a potential leak was received at about 11:45 p.m., prompting a response from the county's hazardous materials team and units from Elkton, North East and Newark, Del., and West Grove, Pa., the Cecil County Department of Emergency Services said.

When responders arrived at the scene, they found 10 cars from the train had derailed, but no evidence of a leak, the department said.

No injuries were reported, and there was no danger to residents in the area, the department said.

The cause of the derailment is being investigated, said Bob Sullivan, a CSX spokesman.
