CHICAGO, Feb. 18 (UPI) -- A Chicago father said the last talk he had with his daughter was about President Barack Obama's gun control proposal -- hours before she was fatally shot.
Jose Colon Jr. and his teenage daughter, Frances, watched the president's address at Hyde Park Academy Friday and agreed gun laws needed to be tightened, the Chicago Tribune reported.
"She said, 'About time they do something with the gun thing,' " the elder Colon recalled.
Colon said he told his daughter he didn't think the changes would come in time to prevent the predictable wave of violence sweeping Chicago each summer.
But Colon could have had no idea how precisely -- and tragically -- correct his prediction would be.
Just hours later, Frances, a senior at Roberto Clemente High School who was planning to attend college next year, was hit in a shooting near her home and died at a hospital later that night.
She is the third student attending Roberto Clemente to be fatally shot this school year, the principal told the Chicago Tribune.
