One dead in Maine apartment explosion

BATH, Maine, Feb. 12 (UPI) -- An explosion in an apartment in Bath, Maine, killed one person and left four others hospitalized, the Maine Fire Marshal's Office said.

The one-story, two-apartment brick building was ripped by the explosion shortly after 5 a.m. Tuesday, and was burning when fire crews arrived, the Portland Press Herald reported.

The identity of the dead person, a woman, will not be confirmed until an autopsy and possible DNA analysis, state Fire Marshal Joe Thomas said.

Of the four who were taken to a local hospital, Sgt. Ken Grimes of the Fire Marshal's Office said one lived in the building's other apartment and suffered a "medical condition" after returning home and observing the explosion and fire. Their conditions were not known.

Fire Chief Steve Hinds told WMTW-TV, Auburn, he suspected a gas or propane explosion was the cause of the incident, and noted a debris field of a quarter-mile around the site.
