Sex offender allegedly taped cheerleaders

SAN ANTONIO, Feb. 11 (UPI) -- Texas police said they arrested a registered sex offender who videotaped a youth cheerleading championship.

Andrew Sanchez III, 60, was charged with one count of improper photography. A San Antonio police officer assigned to provide security at the American Cheer Power Southern National Championship noticed Sanchez allegedly taping the event and began questioning him. When the officer determined Sanchez had no relatives in the event, being held in the Alamodome, he checked his background and found Sanchez had been convicted of child pornography possession in 2008 and sentenced to three years in prison, the Houston Chronicle reported Sunday.

"It appeared he was there for the sole purpose of videotaping the young competitors for his own gratification," the department said on its Facebook page. Tickets to the event were available to the public for $20.

Sanchez was being held in lieu of $7,500 bail.
