One dead as truck dangles over interstate

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Feb. 6 (UPI) -- One person died early Wednesday after a bakery truck crashed through a guardrail and was left dangling over a South Florida interstate, officials said.

The front of the box truck hung precariously over the northbound lanes of Interstate 95 in Fort Lauderdale for more than an hour before a tow truck could pull it safely back onto the overpass, the Miami Herald reported.

The driver of the truck was removed from the vehicle while it was still perched over the roadway and taken to a hospital. A passenger found unresponsive could not be immediately removed and was pronounced dead after being pulled from the truck.

Authorities said the Tracy Bakery truck crashed through a guardrail on the ramp from westbound State Road 84 to northbound I-95 about 5:30 a.m., the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported.

The truck became wedged against a vertical concrete piling.

The identities of the driver and the passenger have not yet been released.
