Parents in abuse case seek reduced bond

VERMILLION, Ohio, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- An Ohio couple charged in the starving death of their 18-month-old son have requested a reduced bond, officials said.

James Brothers, 33, and Adrienne Bartholomew, 25, filed a motion in court this week asking a judge to reduce their bond, the Sandusky (Ohio) Register reported Thursday.

Brothers and Bartholomew are being held at the Erie County jail on $280,000 bond apiece.

"Maintaining the family home is essential to sustaining the needs of this large special-needs family," said their attorney Denise Demmitt.

The couple's youngest child, Isaac Brothers-Bartholomew, died on Nov. 6 of malnutrition at the family's Vermilion home. Their six remaining children, ages 2 to 11, have since been placed in foster care. Some of them were hospitalized for malnourishment.

Many of the children suffer from medical conditions and disabilities, deputies have said.

Brothers, Bartholomew and the children's grandmother, Deborah Nelson, 62, of Vermilion, were indicted earlier this month on five counts child endangering, five counts patient endangering and two counts of involuntary manslaughter.
