San Pedro, Calif., motel fire injures 14

SAN PEDRO, Calif., Jan. 22 (UPI) -- A motel fire in San Pedro, Calif., injured 14 people, fire officials said.

The fire broke out early Tuesday morning and was spotted by a fire company returning from an emergency medical call.

"What they encountered was a two-story apartment building with heavy fire on the first floor," said Los Angeles Fire Department Capt. Jaime Moore. "It was fully occupied. This is 14 units with people living inside."

The fire fighters treated 14 people for injuries. Twelve of the injured were taken to hospitals, three in critical condition, KTLA-TV, Los Angeles, reported.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known, fire officials said.
