Thief makes off with $30,000 Torah

NEW YORK, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- New York City police are searching for a thief who stole a Brooklyn rabbi's car, making off with a $30,000 Torah the rabbi had left inside.

The rabbi was at a service at a synagogue on 18th Avenue Saturday when the thief stole his gray 2007 Toyota Corolla, police said.

The thief was likely unaware the sacred scroll was inside the vehicle, police said.

"Nothing is sacred anymore," a synagogue volunteer, who declined to give her name, said. "Some people used it everyday to pray. When someone takes something very precious away you feel desecrated. It hurts."
