In reversal, unions giving to inaugural

WASHINGTON, Jan. 19 (UPI) -- U.S. President Obama's inaugural committee says it is accepting donations from unions and corporations, a change in policy from Obama's first inauguration.

Nine unions and several major corporations appeared Friday on the Presidential Inaugural Committee's online list of donors to events surrounding Obama's swearing-in Monday for a second term, The Hill reported.

Unions listed this week as contributing to inauguration events include the American Federation of Government Employees, the American Postal Workers Union and the International Association of Fire Fighters.

Corporations such as Bank of America, the Coca-Cola Co. and FedEx appeared on the list for the first time Friday. About 20 major corporations have contributed so far.

Contributions from unions and corporations were not accepted, and donations were capped at $50,000 during the 2009 inaugural.

This year there is no cap. Packages priced between $75,000 and $1 million are available that give access to select events, including the inaugural ball and parade.

As in 2009, lobbyists and political action committees are not permitted to donate.

More than $53 million was raised for the 2009 ceremonies and celebrations.
