NYPD 'cannibal cop' denied bail

NEW YORK, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- A New York police officer dubbed the "cannibal cop" for alleged Internet claims of plans to cook and eat a woman was denied bail, his lawyer said.

Gilberto Valle, who prosecutors said was planning to kill, cook and eat a woman he knew through his job, faces trial this week, though defense attorney Edward Zas said he plans to seek a one-month delay, the New York Post said Tuesday.

Zas said Valle was merely role playing on a cannibal fetish website and never actually planned on killing the woman.

Manhattan federal prosecutor Hadassa Waxman said Valle told a co-conspirator he planned to make a Maryland woman his "next meal" and that his "mouth was watering the whole time" after a July visit.

Zas denied the claim.

"He's done nothing but imagine bad things and put them, foolishly, on the Internet in a really bad way," he said.
