Supreme Court will not hear R.I. case

WASHINGTON, Jan. 14 (UPI) -- The U.S. Supreme Court will not consider Rhode Island's request that it overturn an appellate ruling that the state hand over a homicide suspect.

Gov. Lincoln Chafee had asked the high court to overturn the decision that the state must surrender Jason Pleau, accused of shooting a gas station manager to death outside a bank in a 2010 Woonsocket, R.I., robbery, to face federal prosecution and possibly the death penalty, the Providence Journal reported Monday.

Chafee's opposition to the death penalty led to the request, the newspaper said.

His bid to overturn the ruling was listed Monday as among the cases the Supreme Court, after the justices met Friday, chose not to hear.
