Former professor gets life for sex abuse

OKLAHOMA CITY, Jan. 10 (UPI) -- A former Oklahoma college professor was sentenced to essentially life in prison after pleading guilty to child sexual abuse, lawyers said.

Gary Doby, 66, a former professor at Oklahoma Baptist University, was sentenced to at least 38 years in prison, prosecutors said. Doby pleaded guilty last year after a damning felony hearing in May where 10 young girls testified against him and Kimberly Crain, an elementary school teacher who helped lure the girls into his power, The (Oklahoma City) Oklahoman said Wednesday.

Prosecutors said Doby used Crain, 49, to help get her students out of school and into private situations. Once, he asked the girls to strip down and trim a Christmas tree while photographing them, officials said. At least once, one of the girls said, Doby exposed his penis. Others said they were made to dance suggestively in their underwear with Crain's instruction.

Prosecutors described Doby as the "definition of a pedophile."

Doby and Crain pleaded guilty to 18 counts of sexual exploitation of a child younger than 12.

Pottawatomie County District Judge John Canavan sentenced Doby to at least 38 years in prison before he's eligible for parole, making it likely he'll die behind bars. Crain will be sentenced next month.
