LOS ANGELES, Jan. 7 (UPI) -- Police say pupils back from winter break in Los Angeles will see a greater police presence in their schools following the Newtown, Conn., massacre.
Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck said officers will step up patrols of the city's 600 elementary and middle schools, with an officer visiting every school at least once a day and as many as three times per day.
"I don't want anyone to think they can walk into a school in Los Angeles and be immune from the police, 'cause you won't be," Beck told CBS News Monday.
CBS said many school districts across the country are stepping up security in the wake of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., last month that claimed 20 young children and six faculty members.
