Accused Calif. gift-thief arrested

LOMITA, Calif., Dec. 21 (UPI) -- A California man who allegedly stole gift packages and Christmas cards from unsuspecting residents was arrested, police said.

The man, identified as Michael Wieczorek, 42, was arrested Wednesday in Lomita, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Wieczorek allegedly stole the items from residents' doorsteps, then wrapped at least one gift from each of the packages and addressed it to his mother, investigators said.

"Especially disturbing was the numerous Christmas cards recovered among the stolen mail," Sgt. Mark Moffett said in a news release.

Deputies said they recovered a large amount of cash during a search of Wieczorek's home along with narcotics, credit cards and identifications that did not belong to him.

Wieczorek was released from custody on $20,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear at Superior Court in Torrance Jan. 10.
