Bail cut for Dallas Cowboy Josh Brent
DALLAS, Dec. 18 (UPI) -- A judge in Dallas Tuesday reduced the bail for Dallas Cowboy nose tackle Josh Brent, accused of intoxication manslaughter, from $500,000 to $100,000.
The Dallas Morning News said Brent's attorney George Milner had argued that his client's $500,000 bail was too high.
Brent, 24, is accused in the Dec. 8 death of teammate and close friend Jerry Brown in a single-car crash in Irving, Texas. He has no Texas driver's license and his Illinois license was suspended.
Brent also has been ordered to wear a device to monitor his alcohol intake, and is barred from drinking alochol or driving, the Morning News reported.
Case file on Belcher sheds light on death
KANSAS CITY, Mo., Dec. 18 (UPI) -- The case file of Kansas City Chiefs' Jovan Belcher and his girlfriend Kassandra Perkins suggests trust issues, and mention another girlfriend of Belcher's.
Belcher, 25, shot and killed Perkins, the mother of his 3-month-old daughter, in the home they shared Dec. 1. He then drove to Arrowhead Stadium and killed himself with a different weapon in the parking lot. Jackson County, Mo., prosecutors ruled the deaths a murder-suicide and closed the case Friday, the Kansas City (Mo.) Star reported Tuesday.
The case file, now a public record, includes mention of another girlfriend, 22 and unnamed, who said Belcher claimed Perkins had "threatened to take all his money and his child if they split up," the newspaper said.
The file also mentions Chiefs head Coach Romeo Crennel's observation that he thought the couple had "trust issues," and believed Belcher had contacted a lawyer to get custody of his daughter.
It also states Belcher's mother, Cheryl Shepard, had moved in with the couple, two weeks before their deaths. Shepard said her son and Perkins were having "relationship problems due to financial issues associated with Perkins' spending habits," and said the argument leading to the killings "was in regard to one or both of them going out, as in, to a club or partying."
Former Reds pitcher Pastore dies
UPLAND, Calif., Dec. 18 (UPI) -- Former Cincinnati Reds pitcher Frank Pastore died of injuries suffered in a motorcycle crash in California, the radio station he worked for said on its website.
KKLA-FM, Glendale, Calif., said Pastore, 55, died Monday from complications of injuries from the Nov. 19 collision in Duarte, east of Los Angeles.
Pastore was a member of the Reds from 1979-1985. He pitched in 1986 for the Minnesota Twins and retired from baseball after a final year in the Texas farm system.
His career MLB record was 48-58, with an ERA of 4.29 in 220 appearances.
Pastore had been an on-air host at KKLA, a Christian station, at the time he was injured. He had been in a coma since the crash and was recently transferred from USC Medical Center in Los Angeles to a hospital in Upland, the San Gabriel Valley Newspaper said Tuesday.
Funeral arrangements were pending.
Montgomerie picked for golf Hall of Fame
LONDON, Dec. 18 (UPI) -- Colin Montgomerie, who won 40 tournaments, and golf executive Ken Schofield are to be inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame, it was announced in London.
Montgomerie won 31 times on the European Tour and had nine other titles in various events around the world. He didn't win a major tournament but was second five times and had five other Top 10 finishes.
He won the European Tour Order of Merit a record eight times and had a 20-9-7 record -- 6-0-2 in singles -- in Ryder Cup play.
"While my eight Order of Merit wins were very special, as everyone knows my Ryder Cup experiences have provided the very best moments in my career and receiving this great honor is the icing on the cake," Montgomerie said of the hall of fame induction.
Schofield, selected in the Lifetime Achievement Category, was executive director of the European Tour from 1975-2004. The tour grew from 17 events when he took the position to 45 tournaments in his final year.
Montgomerie, elected through the international ballot, and Schofield join Fred Couples, Ken Venturi and Willie Park, Jr. as the class of 2013 for the World Golf Hall of Fame. They are to be inducted May 6 during The Players Championship in St. Augustine, Fla.
