HARTFORD, Conn., Dec. 2 (UPI) -- A Connecticut woman mauled by a chimpanzee received virtually the entire estate of the animal's owner but it may not cover her medical bills, her lawyer said.
Charla Nash settled with the estate of late friend Sandra Herold for $4 million, which was about all the estate had, the Hartford (Conn.) Courant reported Sunday.
"We were limited in what we could get in this case,'' attorney Charles Willinger told the Courant.
Herold had no insurance covering the horrific 2009 attack by her pet chimp Travis on Nash. Herold had called Nash to her home to help her corral Travis after the chimp stole her car keys and ran outside.
Travis went after Nash as she got out of her car, causing severe injuries to her arms and face. She also lost both hands.
Nash currently lives in a Massachusetts nursing home and has medical bills and further surgeries that will easily exceed $4 million, Willinger said.
Herold died in 2010 leaving a net worth of about $4.5 million. Some of the remaining funds will go toward legal bills.
