The bus was headed for North Highland Elementary School when it was struck by a car running a stop sign at an intersection, police Sgt. Jennifer Wardlow said, noting the impact turned the bus onto its side.

The driver of the car fled the scene after the accident, the police said.

School spokesman Kathleen Kennedy said the 10 students aboard the bus were wearing seat belts at the moment of impact.

"The injuries could have been a lot worse this morning and we are thankful they weren't," Kennedy said.
