Woman sues golf club, charges harassment

BOSTON, Nov. 22 (UPI) -- The Weston Golf Club has asked a federal judge in Boston to dismiss a sexual harassment lawsuit brought by a former waitress.

Monique Karian, 26, alleged she was sexually harassed by fellow employees when she worked there in early 2011, the Boston Herald reported.

Karian, of Waltham, said an acting executive chef grabbed her while other male employees sheered him on, and that she was generally assailed with derogatory terms uttered in Spanish.

"She did not have trust in the business," Karian's attorney, William T. Harrington, said in court Wednesday. "A reasonable employer would do something, would investigate, would ask something, would take steps to make sure it didn't happen again. And they didn't. There certainly is ample evidence of sexual harassment ... and a hostile work environment that would warrant a trial."

Club attorney Samantha C. Halem argued that Karian suffers from "paranoia."

"She assumes they're talking about her because she doesn't understand the language," Halem said.

Halem asked Judge George A. O'Toole Jr. to dismiss the case.
