Saudi man sentenced to prison in bomb plot

AMARILLO, Texas, Nov. 13 (UPI) -- A federal judge in Texas sentenced a Saudi man to life imprisonment Tuesday for a bomb-making operation uncovered in Lubbock last year.

Khalid Ali-Aldawsari, 22, was arrested by FBI agents in February 2011 after he was found in possession of chemicals, recipes and equipment used to make an explosive called pyric acid, the Amarillo Globe News reported.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey Haag said the threat was "very, very real, that Mr. Aldawsari intended to detonate a weapon of mass destruction on American soil."

The Saudi citizen was a former student at Texas Tech University in Lubbock.

He was convicted in June by an Amarillo jury of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction.
